Roulette Guide

Perhaps the most well known and classic casino game of them all – Roulette! Quite easy to understand and an house edge that is fairly low makes it a game for everyone to play.

Roulette is played with a wheel consisting 36 pockets numbered from 1-36. There are also 3 colours, number 1-36 alternate in black and red, and there is also one pocket numbered 0 which is coloured green.

The wheel is spun around by a croupier who also will spin a small ball in the opposite direction of the wheels spin. The ball will eventually fall down into one of the pockets and it’s up to the players to try and predict where this will be.

American & European Roulette

You can find two different versions of roulette, American and European. The only difference is that in the American version you will have two zeros, in the European you will only find one.

Simple Rule: Never play the American version if you don’t have to. The extra zero will double the house odds in their favour.

European Roulette Payouts

You can easily calculate the house edge in roulette. In European roulette, with a single zero, the house edge is 2.7%. You found this out through the following formula: (35-36)/37 x 100 = 2.7%.

As you might have understood already, the casino advantage in the game of roulette comes from the zero on the wheel. If the zero didn’t exist roulette would be an even money game with no house edge.

This is the Roulette Payout table:

Bet Name Payout
Singe Number 35:1
Two Number 17:1
Three Number 11:1
Four Number 8:1
Six Number 5:1
Column bet 2:1
Dozen bet 2:1
Even-Money bet 1:1

There is no winning roulette system around; in the long run we will all be losers. However, it is a very enjoyable game to play and we have a few tips to get you started:

  • Do not think that an outcome is more likely to hit just because it hasn’t for a couple of rounds.
  • The roulette wheel does not have a memory. Every single number of the wheel has the same odds every spin, regardless of previous spins.
  • Play at European Roulette tables as the house edge will be lower.
  • Play at Roulette tables that offers “en prison”. This is a rule where you won’t lose your even money bets if the ball lands on a green or double zero. You will leave the bets in place for the next spin.
  • Play at Roulette tables that offers “surrender”. This rule will give half your even money bets back when the ball lands on the single or double zero.
